What is Bike To Broome?

21 May, 2011

Bike To Broome is happening on 21 August 2011.

So what's it all about?  This project is to raise awareness and to oppose the building of the $30 billion gas hub at James Price Point, north of Broome.  As you know, Woodside Petroleum is planning to build the largest land-based gas processing plant in the world there, with the blessing of the Western Australian government.

But this area of coastline between Broome and Camden Sound in the Kimberley is a seasonal calving ground of humpback whales.  In fact, the annual migation of these whales towards the calving ground is in progress now.

I think the whaling ended in Western Australia in the late seventies.  Since then, the humpback whale population has slowly been recovering.

This gas hub, together with the jetties, the dredging, the breakwater that they want to construct, and the ships, are only going to make things pretty damn difficult for these whales and their calves.  But apart from the whales, there's the snubfin dolphins, the dugongs, turtles, etc.

This project is about raising awareness and giving these voice-less creatures a voice.  Maybe, with enough opposition, Mr Tony Burke, our honorable Federal Minister for the Environment, will reject this proposal.

Please help.  Ride with us if you can, help us in our support team.  Tell all your friends.

Cheers...Paul
