Sunrise and God light

5 February, 2011

When photographing sunrises, clouds can add drama and colour to the sky and what I often call "God light".

I was shooting at a location one time and we happened to be blessed by some beautiful sun rays.  And I used those words "God light" to a fellow photographer who was impressed and later revealed that he was a Christian clergyman as well as a photographer.

God light happens when the sun's rays are let through by clouds, and those rays catch particles in the atmosphere causing the rays to reflect light.  It certainly adds interest to a photograph.  This shot was captured in Hopetoun, down in the south coast of Western Australia.

If you're ever travelling there, go catch some God light at sunrise.  You'll be pleased you did.
